Nuclear History Summer Camp in Hiroshima 2025

Intensive camp to learn about the history of nuclear weapons from various perspectives
September 7 - September 15 in Hiroshima

As part of its human resource development program marking 80 years since the atomic bombings, the Hiroshima Organization for Global Peace (HOPe) will collaborate with the Roma Tre University to host an intensive retreat for young researchers from around the world in Hiroshima City from September 7 (Sun) to 15 (Mon), 2025. Experts from Japan and abroad will serve as lecturers, and through nine days of discussions and exchanges with participants, the program aims to enhance participants' research skills and knowledge of nuclear history.

In order to understand the current international situation surrounding nuclear weapons, it is important to understand the history of nuclear technology, including its origins and development. This special initiative in Hiroshima will include sessions on themes that HOPe is actively working on, such as the reality of the atomic bombing and security without reliance on nuclear deterrence, as well as the perspective of the A-bombed city.

This intensive training program (previously held by the Wilson Center in the US) is now in its 12th year. It contributes to the creation of networks among researchers and research institutions, and many of the past participants have gone on to teach at universities in their respective countries, work as researchers at think tanks and research institutes, and serve as advisors to governments and members of parliament.

Public Symposium

As part of this, a public symposium will be held where world-class lecturers and students participating in the training camp will exchange views on “How can the world reduce its reliance on nuclear deterrence?”
